How's everyone doing? Seems the weeks are speeding up. I was hoping to have this out to all of you early last week, and alas...here I am at 9:30 on another Sunday evening and still writing. Did you get to see the big game last week? If you got the chance to witness the half time show at Super Bowl LX you likely got to experience the pure joy that is Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio - Bad Bunny. The performance was many things, but one thing for sure, it was loaded with joy. You could feel it and it made us feel it too. This got me thinking about my obsession with joy and how to help you all spend more time experiencing it. So let me take a page out of my new book, JOYHeals, and ask you... WHAT'S YOUR JOY STORY? It's a tough time and the weeks don't seem to be getting any better. We continue to see some the worst and best of humanity which so often reminds of our own. We are much more powerful than we think. We are so much more alike than we recognize. And, we can control so much more in our lives than we admit. So why aren't we choosing to have more fun? Why do we choose to mindlessly scroll over more connection? Why don't we choose joy? Part of it is our brain's chemistry and a lot of it is education and choice. The book gets into the details and neuroscience behind it and in practical terms it's simple. Throughout my life that when things get tough...managing a crisis with one of my kids, moving through debilitating loss, or suffering a heavy bout of depression...I reach for small joys to help buoy the pain. It's not always easy. Some days I just can't. And we all need to honor those days. And when can come back and have the tiniest window to let in joy, we must. It's a game changer. WHAT FEELS LIKE JOY FOR YOU? Here's a few that may resonate...
I believe wholly that for us to manage the pain, we must find ways to welcome the joy. Maybe you can try it? This week when things get tense, maybe take a moment for some joy. Take inspiration from the list above or better yet? Find your own ways to experience joy and let me know what you find. More joy = More presence. More presence = More Calm. When we are present we have no propensity to be dwelling on our past or worrying about the future. So why do we spend some much time avoiding it? Here are a few updates on upcoming things that bring me joy! THIS WEEK - FAMILY WEEKEND AT SANTA CLARA UNIVERSITY It's Mica's first family weekend so we're off to California ...will report back on all the joy I find along the way. Morning Sunrise, Manasquan, NJ Hey ya'll, How's it going?? Going to stick with this new format to see how it sticks - hope you dig it! MusingsI've been giving a lot of thought to advice I often give clients, friends, my kids, and myself. The advice is "meet yourself where you are!" So what does that mean? Think of it this way. We are naturally goal- and acquisition-oriented. Trying to achieve the next thing, buy the next thing, save for the next thing - then life shakes up our lives with...
Turtle Crossing | Shark River State Park, NJ WHAT IF LIFE WAS JUST A PRACTICE? When I was still offering one-on-one coaching to folks, I would invite them to consider the quote above during the first or second session. So I ask you, what if life was just a practice? Would we take it all so seriously? ------REALITY CHECK I get it - life can be serious, and the world in 2026 can be a very heavy place if you have a soul. The responsibilities of adulthood are not for the weak of heart. But stick...
